A Little Bit of This and That
Had a funny start to my day yesterday. While I was in a nice hot shower (we’re in a deep freeze in Ontario right now), Donnie threw a cup of cold water on me. Silly guy threw it over top of the shower curtain. All I could do was laugh. Spent Sunday afternoon surfing and found some tremendously inspiring things to share with you.

Snow finally had her ultrasound and it showed nothing. That isn’t to say she doesn’t have a shunt–it just wasn’t visible. She also had a neurology consult which was negative as well. We spoke in great length with Dr. Goldstein, at the Guelph University Vet Clinic, and he is very puzzled because Snow is looking very healthy. Just before we left, they took more blood after fasting 12 hours, then they fed her and took blood again, and would call us with results. Being completely at a loss, we decided to stop Snow’s meds so she would get sick again, and then drive the 150 miles back to Dr. Goldstein so he could assess her when she was sick.
Two days later, Dr. Goldstein called us with an update from Snow’s blood work. He was very surprised at the elevated blood levels after eating which indicates liver problems and a high possibility of a shunt. Remember, a shunt wasn’t seen on ultrasound, so it may an a shunt inside the liver–which is not operable.
So far we have spent $2,000 on Snow’s health, and now have to book her spaying through the university clinic which is more expensive than a local vet. Because of Snow’s ill health, it is imperative that Guelph does the spaying, and at the same time they will do a liver biopsy and cut her a little more deeply to view where the shunt is located. That is an $1,800 to $2,000 bill. Should she have an operable shunt, the cost will be $3,500. We are at a loss but so far we are moving forward. I swore I would never ever spend money on a dog, but how can you help it when she helps my depression. She makes me laugh, and lets me dress her up and hug her in my arms like a baby. She loves car rides and loves going into the stores with me. She even sits so nicely in her pink purse. I have never loved a dog like I love Snow.
Because of her illness, Snow has to eat many small meals and found a love for baby pablum mixed with baby banana food. She loves baby stew and carrots, and raw carrots. She likes cottage cheese and even likes it with baby carrots or bananas.
Tomorrow’s tutorial will be fun. Get your glitter out. I thought it was time to do a super quick and easy tutorial for you for a change.

Feb 1, 2010 - 12:02:28Dear Beth -
As you know, I completely understand your attachment to Snow. They are our children just as much as our human kids are. I also swore that I would not spend that much money on a dog, and not only have I done it once, but have again with our current Shepherd, Thor. Snow is your baby, she loves you and Donnie and you love her back. I pray that they can find what is causing all her issues and help her on the road to recovery. Give that sweet angel a kiss from me.
Hugs,
Elaine Allen
I hope and pray they find out exactly what is wrong.. that it is fixed and Snow will be fine. I am another who always thought I would never spend a large amount of money on a dog….but I now know I would as well….I know exactly what you mean. They are our fur babies…..always giving and giving such a pure love and affection….Give that Sweetie and hug for me and my Buddy too!!….Hugs, Ila
They love us without question. They don’t care if we are not slim not quite beautiful, or don’t wear the latest designer labels. They are loyal and trusting and I can’t imagine life without my fur baby Harvey now.
He’s given us so much love it hurts, so I totally understand why you would practically sell your soul for Snow. Keeping everything crossed for the little lady.
What I DON’T understand is you laughing when you get a cup of cold water thrown over you!! LOL
Give that little princess a big hug hug from me Beth.
Hugs Viv xxxx
Been there, done that! Can’t imagine NOT trying to save our little furball! You are in my thoughts! Hmmm…does Donnie know that we girls have ways of getting even??? lol!!! Thanks for the inspiration links! Have a great day – can’t wait to see what you do with glitter!
I completely understand. I feel the same way about my fur babies too. I am currently freaking about about my little Westies teeth needing to be cleaned. I can only image what you are going through. Hope everything turns out okay. You will both be in my thoughts.
Oh Beth I sure hope and pray everything goes well with Snow and they find the shunt and can fix everything poor little baby they sure win our hearts don’t they.
Hugs to little Snow.
Oh Beth, I know that you are beside yourself worrying about Snow’s condition. I hope and pray that after this round of testing, the doctors will see exactly what needs to be done and cure Snow. I have said a prayer and I’m hoping for the best!
Take care and try not to worry dear *ü*
Big Hugs
