How to Watercolour with Gel Pens
Have you ever wondered what you can do with gel pens besides using them in your scrapbook journalling? Today I will teach you how to watercolour with gel pens. As you can see, watercolouring with the pens leave a very soft effect. Gel pens can be purchased at your craft supply store or business store (ie. Staples, Office Max). In my tutorial I am using Peel Offs that I purchased at my local craft store. They can also be purchased at Frantic Stamper Inc. and in the UK at Liz’s Crafts. The brush I used is a size 0.
Supplies: Gel pens, small painting brush, Peel Offs or you can heat emboss in any colour you wish.
Carefully pull apart the Peel-Off and place it onto your paper.
Along the bottom area, colour a small spot, and with a damp brush, work your colour from the bottom to the top. Remember to press gently on your pen.
To leave areas of white space, clean your brush and work the ink from the top to the bottom where you coloured. This will work the colour back to the bottom and leave a nice white, or faded colour, area.
In small areas, draw a line along the edge (pretend you don’t see where I went over the line) . With your brush, run along the line you just drew so the colour won’t bleed to the opposite line. Remember, you want to leave some white space.
Finished butterfly.

This is beautiful! I love the soft effect you get with this technique. I’ll have to dig out my gel pens and give this a try. Hmm, wonder if it would would with my Sakura glitter gel pens too – now where did I put those things . . .

I never thought of colouring/painting with gel pens. What a great idea. I am going to have to try this. I wonder if it even works on those cheap gel pens you get form the dollar store? My kids have a ton of those!
