A Painting that Wasn’t to Be
Have you ever made a present for someone only to find out that they didn’t want it? I did just that. Well, sort of.
Because I wasn’t sure if this style of painting would fit into my daughter’s apartment, I sent her a link to Kelley Rae Roberts. I purchased Kelley’s book to learn how to replicate her style. Wasn’t I disappointed when Sarah said, “I like her stuff but it is too girly for my apartment and for Jon.” As you can imagine, my heart sunk. To this day Sarah doesn’t know I painted her this, nor will she ever because I threw it out. Yes, you heard it right, I threw it out.
Why didn’t I keep it? If you take a peak at her dress, I photocopied excerpts from a recent front-page newspaper article that was done about Sarah and her recent trips to China and Africa (she works in Toronto for Free the Children). Looking back at the photo, I am sorry that I threw it out.
Am I afraid that Sarah could be reading this? Nope. She and Jon are backpacking in Costa Rica.

I can’t believe you threw out this painting! What a shame. The angels eyes are just beautiful, what a wonderful background. And I really love how you did her wings. Such a shame. I hope someone found her and is enjoying her.

You know sometimes it is just GOOD therapy to do something an not keep it! It was a wonderful idea- sorry it was not Sarah’s cup of tea! I love Kelly Rae- and your piece is stunning! I hope you fun making it
You are lucky I don’t know where my passport is, because I would drive to Canada and slap you silly for not letting Sarah decide for herself whether she wanted the painting! Just because she doesn’t want a painting by the artist you were trying to copy doesn’t mean she wouldn’t want yours!
In a slightly different note, have you completely closed your mind to the possibility of grandchildren, particularly female ones? Where would they sleep, I wonder?
you should remake it in the form of a birthday card, I bet she would love it, keep it forever, without feeling like she HAD to hang it up.
I agree with everyone else, you should never have gotten rid of it! it is very cool!

This was a gorgeous painting and I know there was a lot of work and love went into it. But as you say, some things aren’t meant to be. Hope someone found it and is enjoying right this minute.
Hugs

Silly girl, I would not have thrown the art out, I would have kept it! It’s wonderful! And, what made you think that because your daughter didn’t like someone else’s art that she wouldn’t have loved yours? I still luv ya:)
Beth, this painting is so beautiful!!! Create another one and keep it this time. I love this style! Awesome job!
Oh my! Well I don’t think I will scold you anymore for throwing away your awesome artwork. It really was quite beautiful. But maybe you can make one in your own style for the lucky couple and they will hang it in a place of honour in their home. You really have an awesome daughter to be doing the work she does and traveling the world!
)
And thankfully you took a photo of it to share with us on your blog!
Hi Beth,
What a pity that you threw it out if you love the style, you should have kept it for yourself. But then we all do “spur of the moment” things, perhaps you could do a different painting for yourself but in the same style.
Well, what can I say!Juliet A beat me to the punch! LOL
I must admit, it’s not my style, but you did an awesome job of re-creating Kelley Rae’s style! Just to make you feel even worse, I agree, I bet your daughter would have loved your painting. Ah well, maybe when she ceases globe-trotting and finds this blog post, she’s beat you about the brains with a wet fish! Ha Ha!! Love Viv xxx
Oh sweetie, what a shame, but I know, what you felt the moment you threw it out, as I did the same for my daughter once, and I did the same in the moment of frustration, because I was soo sure, she would love it and then it was like a bucket of cold water in the face, when she just turned her thumbs down, so I wount blame you hun, but I´ll still say, it´s a shame, as it´s a really awesome painting, and I too hope, that someone has found it and is enjoying it just now. And I afgree to many of the other girls here, you should do another one and keep for yourself, and who knows, maybe she´ll even like it then, when she see, how you make them look? It´s really gorgeous work hun, and I´m sure glad, I got to see it.
HAve a wonderful week-end, and stop regretting you threw it out, as it can´t be undone now, so better look ahead and make another one instead sweetie.
Biiiiiiiiiiig warm hugs Maryann
sorry this was not Sarah’s cup of tea but I bet if she had seen all the work you put in this she would have changed her mine, sorry you trashed it.
Hugs

Hi Beth, I like your painting, so sorry you threw it away! But I can imagine your feelings. Maybe you could make a painting in your own style? Hugs, Lucy
Hi, Beth! I am also sorry that you threw your painting away. It was lovely and I’m sure someone would have enjoyed it.
But, I am so pleased that you at least took the time to photograph it! You will always have this photograph as a memory of the piece. And I am so glad that you shared it with us!
