Tutorial Tuesday: Paper Handbag

paper-handbag-tutorial_1

I am very excited about today’s tutorial.  This coordinating set was designed by me for the Moxie Fab Bag Lady Challenge. If you do not have faux alligator skin paper don’t worry–you can create your own by using the Tiny Mosaic Texture embossing plate (pictured below) with brown or green paper.  The tutorial for the wallet will be posted next week.

tiny-mosaic-texture

Supplies needed to make your handbag

Template (click here)

Two pieces of designer paper, or 1 designer and 1 cardstock

Alligator paper cut as follows:

12″ x 1″ (edging for around the top of the handbag)

2 – 1 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ (belt straps)

2 -9″ x 2″ (handle)

6 – 1 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ (front, side, back decorative corners)

Front panel for front of purse  3 1/4″ x 1 1/4″ and 3 1/4″ x 3/4″ (use whatever paper you use on the inside of your handbag)

Bone Folder

6 brads

paper-handbag-tutorial_2

Trace your template onto the back of two sheets of designer paper and cut out.

paper-handbag-tutorial_3

Adhere the wrong sides of paper together.  I did not have enough paper so the top edge ran over the pattern part of the paper.  Because alligator paper will wrap along the top of the handbag, it does not interfere with the finished product.

paper-handbag-tutorial_4

Bend the edges of the flaps inwards.  Rub down with a bone folder.

paper-handbag-tutorial_5

Fold the purse edge down and press with bone folder.

paper-handbag-tutorial_6

Place adhesive on the folds.  Lay front of purse down to allow the side of the purse to lay flat.  Line up the left tip of the edge with the far right corner.  Press securely to ensure a tight hold.

paper-handbag-tutorial_7

Cut alligator paper as directed above.

paper-handbag-tutorial_8

To create a nice edge for belt tip, lay belt against a pointed object, such as a die cut, and trim.

paper-handbag-tutorial_9

Before securing the 1 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ corners, place on each corner and hold in place and flip upside down.  The corner should have a nice horizontal edge–no tilting or the purse will not look right.

paper-handbag-tutorial_10

Draw a cut line on the part of the paper that hangs over edge.

paper-handbag-tutorial_11

This is what your four trimmed pieces will look like.  The remaining two pieces will be square and are to be used on the sides of the purse.

Directions for sewing (if you do not have a sewing machine you can adhere paper with double-sided tape or ATG tape) and adhering to handbag.

Front Panel:  Place the 3 1/4″ x 3/4″ DP on top of the 3 1/4″ x 1 1/4″ DP and sew down the sides of the shorter piece.  Adhere to the front of your handbag.

Side Belt: Fold the 1 1/2″ x 4 1/4″ belts in half.  Trim the corner edge as shown in the above photo.  Sew along all edges.

(6) 1 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ panel fronts, sides and backs:  Sew around the perimeter of each square.  Sew belt in place, ensuring the belt back is adhered onto the back panel.  Add a brad at each of the two pointed ends of the belt. Each piece is now ready to be adhered to the handbag as shown.

Top Edging:  Sew around perimeter of 12″ x 1″ paper.  Fold in half.  Place adhesive on wrong side and place around the top edge of the handbag.  Press along the outside of the edging, leaving the backside edging up so that the brads (described below) can be punched through.  Once the brads are punched through, you can adhere the inside of the edging to the DP.

Handles:  Fold the 9″ x 2″ paper in half and sew around the perimeter.  Place brads onto the ends of the handles and put through the designer paper.

What is Watercolour Paper?

One of my favourite methods of colouring a stamped image is to watercolour with Tombow markers, and for that watercolour paper needs to be used.  Whether a stamp artist or professional artist, watercolour paper is all the same; it is personal preference that determines what brand and style of paper is used.

Watercolour paper is paper that has been treated specifically to prevent absorption.  There are three things that determine the weight and feel of the paper, and that is how much pulp is used, how it is treated, and how it is processed.  A hot pressed surface is smooth, while a cold press surface is a little roughter.   On close inspection, each piece of watercolour paper has a smooth side and a rough side.  Again the roughness is determined by the factors discussed above.

Watercolour paper is labelled by weight.  Weight is determined by pounds per ream, or grams per square meter.  The lighter the paper, the higher the tendancy to warp.

As a rubberstamp artist, 70 pound paper is acceptable to use because less water is placed onto the paper, thereby decreasing the risk for warping.  I purchase a heavier pound paper in booklet form because it travels well, it  warps less, and book paper goes on sale.

In summary, picking the right paper isn’t  rocket science.  With the information provided, your next trip to the art store should be a little easier.

Facing our Fears

Kelly Rae Roberts wrote:

‘In my moodiness and quietness the last few days, I’ve had some weird feelings of fear, fear of being “found out.”  It’s a strange and vague sense that I’ve fooled everyone into thinking that I’m thoughtful, talented and worthy of success, when on the inside it feels more like inadequacy.  My film-maker friend Kat calls it the “impostor syndrome”–when you’re worried that others are realizing that you’re  not so talented or smart after all, and that you just fooled them all into thinking so.’

What are your thoughts?

Tutorial Tuesday: Favour Box

odd-bird-planet-favour-box

This cute little favour box is perfect for your next gathering.  It will hold a few candies, or three decadent truffles.  This template comes from A Moment in Time.

odd-bird-planet-favour-box_1

Supplies:

Favour Box Template

Three colours of ink

Embossing Gun

Clear Embossing Powder

Sponges (I use 2)

Rubber stamps (pictured is Odd Bird Planet-Long Bracket Frame 594L and Circle Dot Background 98K

odd-bird-planet-favour-box_2

Cut out template. With Versamark on your stamp, stamp out background image over the entire surface.  Sprinkle with clear embossing powder.

odd-bird-planet-favour-box_3

Heat emboss.

odd-bird-planet-favour-box_4

In a circular motion add first colour onto cardstock.  Rub darker in some areas.  To avoid a muddy surface, do not overlap colours on the sponge.  I allow for two colours per sponge.

odd-bird-planet-favour-box_5

Continue to add colour.  To achieve the best effect, rub colour in a variety of spots as pictured.

Turn cardstock over and score at the lines indicated.

Fold box and decorate with a name tag.

Flowers are the Poetry of Nature

stampin-up-bella-blossom_watercolor-bella-blossom_orange

This card was created for a sketch that Jen Del Muro posted last month.  The card uses only one sheet of K&Company designer paper.  The distressed shabby chic paper has multiple blended colours that I carefully cut out to look like three coordinating pieces of DP.

Once again I used my multiple layer watercolour technique, but this time I mixed things up a bit by using orange and yellow Tombow markers.

Thank you for stopping by!

My card uses the “Owl” stamp, which can be used in many ways.  It is a great stamp for Halloween, don’t you think?  Inspiration for this acrylic painting came from art by Blonde Blythe. The image and background were painted with acrylic paints, directly onto cardstock.  Warping did not happen because I added little to no water.

This week the design team really mixed things up for you. Details for each project can be found by following the links to their blogs.

Kim created a 4 x 4 card with the Owl stamp

Beth made a scrapbook page with Canada Goose Standing.

Jennifer made a card with the Owl stamp.
