S&D Challenge 9: Alice in Wonderland-Fairy Tales

challenge-9-alice-in-wonderland

Today is an exciting day!  We have new stamps available.   I wanted to create another picture frame to go with last week’s picture frame and mini masking tutorial.  Now that I have new studio space, I’m looking for ways to decorate it up.  Queen of Hearts was stamped out on watercolour paper and watercoloured with Tombow and SU watercolour markers. Paper around the frame is Bo Bunny.  Little paper flowers and pink leaves were cut out of BasicGrey paper.  Flowers are Prima, except for the big flower which is from Dollarama.  Green leaves, Martha Stewart punch.

Please join us and show off your talent.  Show us a fairy tale card or project. You are welcome to use any product. Of course we’d prefer that you use images by Sunflowers and Dragonflies Creative Designs, but feel free to use other images if you don’t have one of ours.  This week’s prize is a complete set of  Alice in Wonderland stamps.

Please post a direct link to your challenge project  (with a link back to the this challenge) from either your blog or an online gallery so we can view it, no later than Saturday afternoon.   If you upload to an online gallery, please use the keyword S&D9.

Let’s see what the Design Team have for you…

Bargello Cupcake

technique-junkie-newsletter_bargello

A big bright background for my big bright cupcake.  The Technique Junkie Newsletter recently published the Bargello technique, but as luck would have it, it is one of the first tutorials I ever did back in October 2007.  It’s not often you will find us doing the same tutorials, so that is why I encourage everyone to subscribe to Pat’s Technique Junkie Newsletter.  Each edition is filled with so many techniques that come to your mailbox in a high gloss newsletter form.  In the printed copy, step by step directions are provided.  In addition to the printed material, you will receive a password to view the actual photo step-by-step tutorials, and the Turbo Team gallery where examples of each technique are made available. PLUS there is an on-line yahoo group where hundreds of cards are posted by the Turbo team, and regular subscribers like yourself.

A complete alphabetical list of what is included in back issues shows you what you can purchase.  Back issues are always available.

If you subscribe, tell Pat that Beth sent you.  Join the 4,000 subscribers today.

One Inch Cupcakes

cupcake-stamp-inchies-card-inchies

Okay, I admit it.  Since doing my Inchie Art tutorial, I’m hooked on inchies.  I’m even posting another inchie art tutorial very soon.  Are you as intimidated by inchies as I was?  Why not try out my Inchie Art tutorial and put your own spin on it.  Beth Ullman caught my attention by playing along with my tutorials each week, and that is how she became one of my Design Team members.  You can see Beth’s inchie art card she recently created after viewing my tutorial.

Cupcake Inchie Instructions

Using watercolour paper, cut out 9 one-inch pieces

Stamp miniature cupcakes at random

With a 0 and 1 size paintbrush, paint colour onto cupcakes.  This is done by dipping your brush into a tray of water, dabbing wet brush onto paper towel to absorb a little bit of the water.  Next, take your brush and pick up colour from the tip of your Tombow or SU watercolour marker and place the colour onto your image.  Rewet brush and blend colour.

Layer several times with the same colour to achieve an intense shade.

Technique Junkie Newsletter alert

When I watercolour my images, I like to add homemade backgrounds.  After spending so much time making my images look pretty, I like to take it to the next step and create my own backgrounds.  Homemade backgrounds enhance the finished product.  Wouldn’t you agree?

My card uses the Waxy Cuttlebug technique, found in the April 2008 issue.

Cupcake stamps will be available on my new website this Saturday.

Tutorial Tuesday: Cupcake picture frame and mini mask tutorial

cupcake-stamp-picture-frame-finished_masking-technique

Cupcake stamps are the theme this week.  Because I love my new cupcake stamps that will be released this Saturday, I decided to create a picture frame that can hang on my wall above my desk so I can keep looking at them without being in the way of my stamping table.  I hope this inspires you to do your own frame with some of your favourite images.  On a tight budget? This is perfect for you.  For a buck (or a “loonie” as us Canadians call our $1.  We have the loon bird on our metal dollar coin, thus the coin phrase (pun intended) “loonie.”)  A mini masking tutorial is included in this tutorial.

My images were watercoloured using watercolour paper, Tombow and Stampin’ Up watercolour markers.  Directions are generic, so pull out your favourite colouring medium.

Supplies:

Dollar store ugly frame with a mat

Pretty paper (I used Bo Bunny)

Stamps

strong adhesive

Stamps and colouring supplies

Embellishments:  ie. Stickles, ribbon, Prima flowers, sentiments

Here is my ugly frame from the dollar store.  Note that it has large flat surface areas that are perfect to decorate.  Rounded edges will not work.

cupcake-stamp-picture-frame-paper-art-picture-frame_2

Flip your frame upside down, trace the outline onto the wrong side of your paper.  Take the paper and place the wrong side up on top of your frame.  With a ruler draw a line from corner to corner in an X formation, and then cut along the lines with an exacto knife.  This photo shows you this finished step.

cupcake-stamp-picture-frame-paper-art-picture-frame_3

With a strong adhesive (ie ATG gun or double-sided tape), run a layer all around the top of your frame and along the inside edges.

cupcake-stamp-picture-frame-paper-art-picture-frame_4

Place your frame front onto your cut pretty paper.  Adhere paper to the inside edges, cut off excess paper and fit snug into the frame as pictured above.

cupcake-stamp-picture-frame-paper-art-picture-frame_5

Turn over.  Decorate the front and inside edges of your frame with ribbon.

cupcake-stamp-picture-frame-paper-art-picture-frame_7

It’s time to cover the mat.

cupcake-stamp-picture-frame-paper-art-picture-frame_8

Place wrong side up and lay flat on your mat paper.  Trace around the inside and outside edges and cut along those lines.

cupcake-stamp-picture-frame-paper-art-picture-frame_9

Next, place your mat onto cardstock or watercolour paper and draw lines along the inside edge of your frame.  This is for placement purpose.  You don’t want to finish your colouring only to discover it does not fit into your frame.

cupcake-stamp-picture-frame-paper-art-picture-frame_10

Stamp out your images you wish to place in the foreground (front).

cupcake-stamp-picture-frame-paper-art-picture-frame_12

Restamp those foreground images onto post-it notes and cut out.  Place the cut post-it notes over top of your stamped images, and stamp out your background images.

cupcake-stamp-picture-frame-paper-art-picture-frame_13

Remove post it notes, and erase the placement lines with a white eraser.  Pink erasers tend to leave a smudge mark.

You are now ready to complete your colouring.  My image was stamped onto watercolour paper and watercoloured with Tombow and SU markers.

cupcake-stamp-picture-frame-finished_masking-technique-2

Don’t forget to add embellishements onto the outside of your frame.  Perhaps you can find a coordinating image.

Have fun.  Go wild.  Think outside the box!  If you link up your project, I will shout out to all my readers and send them in your direction.  Happy stamping!

A complete list of tutorials are listed on my Tutorial page.

S&D Challenge 8: Sweet Tooth

cupcake-stamp-sweet-tooth-challenge-beth-norman-4

This is a very exciting week for Sunflowers & Dragonflies Creative Designs.  Want to know why?  We are showcasing cupcake stamps drawn by our new artist, Marisa of Elegant Bloggery.  When I came across her cupcakes I asked her to make some for us.  I am sure you will love these just as much as me.   All week I will showcase more projects and cards with these delightful cupcakes.

Cupcakes are stamped out on watercolour paper and watercoloured with Tombow and Stampin’ Up.

The surprises don’t stop there.  Next week we will showcase another stamp line by another artist.  They are darling and will win your hearts.  I know they won mine :)

Both stamp lines will become available to purchase on my new website which will be unveiled on September 19th.

I Wish I May, I Wish I Might

penny-black-stamp_twinkling-h2os_1

This cute little fella was coloured with Prismacolor pencil crayons, and painted with Twinkling H2O’s.

I love painting with Twinkling H2O’s.  They add a pretty shine to the image.  Wanting your eye to notice the colouring and painting, I kept this card simple and clean.

Elegant Peony

splitcoaststampers-cc3258

It’s my first day of two weeks holiday, and I buried myself in the studio all day.  This card was made for Splitcoast Stampers Colour Challenge:  Basic Black, Kiwi Kiss and Elegant Eggplant.  Having run out of Kiwi Kiss, I substituted with Old Olive.

The peony flower was stamped out four times onto watercolour paper, turned over and then watercoloured with Tombow and Stampin’ Up markers.  The decorative rectangle is from SU, and the decorative corners are CB.  Ribbon is from Michaels.

I attended a scrapbook workshop last night over at Stephanie’s house.  Haven’t scrapbooked in over a year and it was so much fun to get back into it, and meeting stampers and scrapbookers in the area.

Thank you for stopping by.  Have a great day!
