Archive for March, 2010:
Try That Technique
BIG ANNOUNCEMENT
Pat Huntoon just announced a fabulous sale and everyone is welcome to take part in this sale. Pat’s full announcement can be read on our DT blog called Design Junkies.
By now you all realize I am a technique junkie by heart. Not only do I post weekly tutorials, but I am on the Turbo Team of the Technique Junkie Newsletter. I share my personal discoveries with Pat whereby I shoot tutorials for the TJ website, and write them out for TJ newsletter.
So many of you have said to me, “I love the technique, but I don’t know how to do it because I’m not a subscriber.” Worry no more. Pat is offering issues at half price. Whenever we use a challenge from a particular year, that year’s issues are half the price. Who can pass that up?!
This week’s half price special includes all 2003 issues where you will find the Tapestry Technique we are using in this week’s challenge. This sale ends next Wednesday.
What will I get for one year’s issues? The same as a current subscriber:
- Six high quality newsletters, printed on high gloss paper with coloured photos. Tutorials are in written form.
- Access to the on-line website where the step-by-step photo tutorials are revealed. A gallery for each technique is attached to each technique, where the Turbo Team cards can be seen.
- Your challenge cards are entered into a random draw where the winning prize is having that card on the Yahoo group home page for the entire week. Talk about cool!
Please, if you do sign up, tell her Beth sent you.
Technique Junkie Challenge: Tapestry

Okay Peeps, you are in for a treat. Diana and I had our challenge evolve and we are now an official weekly Technique Junkie Challenge.
This week’s card uses the Tapestry technique from way back in February 2003. Diana made a cool card using this technique, so why don’t you take a peak and give her a big hello. Her card looks like real leather.
My cute little Stamping Bella image was coloured with Prismacolor Pencil Crayons and OMS. A little touch of Stickles adds some glitz and glitter. The card is a little bare for my usual style, because I wanted to concentrate on the gorgeous background and the colouring.
Starting next week (Pat is doing this week’s TJ post), I will be posting my card to the Technique Junkie “Design Junkie” blog with an announcement of the week’s challenge. Pat kicked it up a notch by allowing me to randomly select a winning card, and guess what the winner gets? A week in the spotlight by having your card on the TJ Yahoo group home page for the whole week. It doesn’t get better than that I tell yah!
Whoop! Whoop!
Mr. Linky will be attached to our challenge post. YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE A TECHNIQUE JUNKIE TO PLAY IN OUR CHALLENGES. You can link yourself up so we can visit your blog, but you cannot be a recipient of the winning card. But hey, linking us up sends me (and the others to your blog), so really this is a win win situation for the two of us.
Well Peeps, it’s really late–like 10:15 late, and anyone who knows me, knows I’m in bed by 8:00 p.m. on work nights because 5:00 a.m. comes too quickly. My day starts at 7:00 a.m. at the hospital, but I like to spend one hour on the internet every morning so I can tackle my massive amounts of e-mailings (currently at 200 unread messages–and that’s no exaggeration) and watch what I taped on TV the night before. God bless the inventor of the DVR. I can’t program DVD players, but magically I can program a DVR. It must be a woman who invented the DVR. Ohhh, I really must be tired; I have not chit chatted like this in ages.
HAVE A GREAT DAY FOLKS. LET’S SEE YOUR CARDS!

How to Emboss Your Oversized Card

“How do you emboss a 6″ x 6″ card front?” This is a question I have been asked, time and time again. Today I am going to show you one of the easiest ways to do just that. Most of my cards are 6″ x 6″ so I am always trying to come up with something that looks interesting and discovered this technique when I was wanting to emboss my 6″ x 6″ card.
My designer paper was made by using the Abstract Embossing Technique from the April 2005 issue of the Technique Junkie Newsletter.  My image is a download from Twisted Papers. My Flourish stamp is from Fancy Pants and the sentiment is from Stampin’ Up.

Basic supplies this week:Â Small Cuttlebug folders.

Today’s card is a little bigger than 6 x 6. If you want to create the same size as I did, make the small square 4 3/4″ and the large square 5 3/4″.

Place the small Cuttlebug folder so the pattern is against both the side and the bottom edges. Repeat for each corner.

Each corner is embossed and the card front is ready to be decorated.

Another view of the embossed corners.
Please link me up to your cards that use this technique. I’d love to see what you did.
An index of all my tutorials is listed in my Tutorial page above.
Stampin’ Up Free Goodies

Holy smokes, did I make the jackpot or what!? I’m in a Stamper’s 12 group where we get together at Sue’s house (SU rep) and spend a min. of $25 a month, and take turns playing hostess. My name was drawn for February, which happens to be one of the three best months to play hostess because of the Celebration promotion that is on. My sales were so good, that I had lots of free shopping to do, and everything you see in front of me was FREE. Free, Free, Free.
No time to stamp today–I’m over at Sharon’s working on my clay project. We’ve been playing with this project for many months, and I hope to come close to completion today. I can’t play all day though–I have a tutorial to shoot for tomorrow. Will take some pics of our projects.
Well, it’s time to head off to Tim Hortons. Have a good one!

The Leprachauns are out and about and I caught a glimse of a couple of them. If I catch one, do you think they will show me where the pot of gold is? Our design team is getting into the Irish spirit and created some awesome cards for you.
If you want to play along, all you have to do is create an Irish related card or project, link it up to us, and mention us in your post. If you post to an on-line forum, name it SD33.

Reader of the Week: Patti Gilliam

It’s been a while since I had a Reader of the Week for you. Now that I’m back on track, I would like to introduce you to Patti J Gillam, a long time reader who enjoys participating in our challenges and chit chatting with me.
Patti has been a rubber stamper for 8 years and has a blog called Cherish Each Precious Day.
Favourite Colour Combination: Black, white with a mix of a third colour.
Favourite Style:Â Class, elegance and simplicity.
Favourite Stamp: I honestly have never met a stamp I didn’t like, but clear stamps are such a delight to use. I love being able to see exactly where my image is going.

Card done at a recent Michelle Zindorf workshop
I love to take part in challenges and swaps when I can. I haven’t gotten too involved in the forums yet. There are so many options available, and it’s still a bit overwhelming to me!

How did you start blogging? Ironically, my blog began in November of 2008, when we started remodeling a bathroom in our home. Our daughter lived in New York, and our son in California, and it was a good way to keep them up to date on each step of the remodel. When that job was finished, I was going to shut down the blog, and my friends and family suggested showcasing my hobby. 284 posts later, I’m still blogging!
DT Work: I am a design team member of Paper Cupcakes.
Tell us about your family: In April, I will celebrate 37 years of marriage to my wonderful husband, Stan. He is my soulmate, and totally supports my addiction to all things paper and ink! Our son is 34 years old, and is an Air Force Major in Los Angeles. Our daughter is 29, and works as a Marketing Director for a branch of the YMCA. Our little white furball, Flake, and our grand-dog in LA., complete our family. No grandbabies yet, but we haven’t given up hope!
Do you read and if so, a favourite book or author? Next to playing with paper, I love to read. My favorite authors change from book to book! I read anything from History or Political non-fiction to Christian writers, love stories, comedies, and just finished the Twilight Series.
Other hobbies? A spring and summer love of mine is gardening. I will never be too old to be amazed when a clump of dirt becomes a beautiful and colorful bloom.
Patti, thank you for a glimse into your life as a stamper, mother and wife. It was so nice to learn more about one of my readers.
Patti would love to hear from you. Please visit her on her blog, Cherish Each Precious Day, and let her know you read about her here.
Wednesday Technique Challenge

This week Diana Enns challenged me to create a card using the Faux Paper Aging technique from the March 2004 issue. I am so pleased with the results, and so pleased I tried this technique because I often want an aged background, and don’t know what technique to try.
This Stampin’ Up train set hasn’t been inked up much, so I thought it was time as it goes so nice with the aged paper.
So, if you’re a Technique Junkie subscriber and have the March 2004 issue, you can play along and post your card to the Yahoo group.
How to Create Spellbinder Nestabilities Frames

One of my favourite tools are Spellbinder’s Nestabilities.  My large selection of Nestabilities are neatly organized in CD cases which sit on my table, directly in front of me. When I find my labeler, they will be organized even better.
In trying to come up with a unique idea, I discovered that by placing two Nestabilities on my cutting mat, a unique frame was created. To take this a step further, you can mix and match all kinds of shapes and sizes. If that is not enough, you can kick it up a notch by embossing your frame, as seen in my Glitter Embossing tutorial.
My image is a download from Creativity with a Twist.

Choose the size of Nestabilities that appeal to you. Do you want to cover the entire image or do you have a small image that needs a larger frame to fill your space?

Place your Nestablities Spellbinders onto your cutting mat. Lay your paper on top, and then place the top plate on top. Be careful, you don’t want to move your Nestabilities.

This photo shows two widths. On the left, the inside Nestability that was used was two sizes smaller than the outside Nestability. On the right, the inside Nestability used was the next size down from the outside Nestability. Make sense?

To kick it up a notch, you can emboss your frame. Here I used my Glitter Embossing technique.

Close up view of the Nestabilities frame.

SD Challenge: Easter

Here comes Peter Cotton Tail, hopping down the bunny trail. Don’t you remember singing that as a kid? Easter was always so special. We woke up to the Easter Bunny’s arrival and had new dresses for church. My Polish grandmother would take mom, my sisters and I to church to have our Easter baskets (filled with food) blessed. As I got older I continued on with my own tradition and sewed matching dresses for my daughter, Sarah, and I.
What is your Easter tradition? I would love to hear about it.
Easter will be here soon, so we thought we would get creative and get ahead of the game by creating something for Easter. We are excited to announce that:
We now carry JustRite stamps
To view our stamps click here
Here is what set we used today:

The fun thing about JustRite is that they sell their wooden handle separately, so you can interchange a variety of sets. Each stamp is interlocking and fits snuggly into the handle. The circular sentiments are separate from the center image so you can change the colour of your ink or use a different sentiment.
The Design Team have created some cute projects for you…
